Reconsideration of Retirement Age

Subject: Clarification on Retirement Age and Employment Opportunities for Youth

The Government of India, through the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, has addressed concerns related to the potential revision of the retirement age for government employees. This clarification follows an unstarred question raised in the Lok Sabha (No. 1505) by Shri Tejasvi Surya regarding the retirement policies and their impact on employment opportunities for the youth of the nation.

Key Clarifications and Updates

  1. Proposal on Revising Superannuation Age

    • There is no proposal under consideration by the Government to revise the retirement age of government employees to a maximum of 30 years of service or 60 years of age, whichever is earlier.
  2. Uniformity in Civil Services Retirement Policies

    • No changes are being planned at this stage to modify the retirement policies for civil servants. The existing retirement age policies will remain in effect to ensure consistency in administrative functioning.
  3. Youth Employment Measures

    • The Government remains committed to fostering employment opportunities for the youth.
    • Ministries and Departments of the Central Government have been directed to fill vacant posts promptly.
    • Rozgar Melas are being conducted across various sectors, including Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), autonomous bodies, and educational and health institutions, to facilitate large-scale youth employment.
    • Recruitment efforts are carried out in mission mode to address unemployment and create opportunities aligned with national priorities.

Government's Stand

While the Government acknowledges the need for employment opportunities for the younger generation, it believes that the current retirement policies are adequate to balance experience in governance and opportunities for fresh talent. Employment generation efforts continue to prioritize the nation's youth while ensuring robust and efficient civil services.
