Postal Department to Go Fully Digital: Business Process Reengineering Underway

New Delhi: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced a major transformation initiative to make the postal department completely digital. Speaking at the 50th Foundation Day celebration of the Indian Post, Telecommunications, and Financial Services Department, the minister emphasized the need for business process reengineering to adapt to the rapidly growing e-commerce sector.
Scindia reiterated that the postal service is a cornerstone of public service in India, and its digital transformation will ensure its relevance in the modern business landscape. He highlighted the shift towards creating a streamlined, technology-driven platform that aligns with contemporary needs.
Transformation into a Logistics Corporation
The minister further revealed that the Department of Posts will be restructured into a Logistics Corporation, positioning it as the largest organization of its kind in the world. The department already boasts the largest distribution network globally, with 1.64 lakh post offices spread across urban and rural India.
Reflecting on the department's unique reach, Scindia remarked on the vital role of rural postal staff, who continue to provide essential services by visiting households across remote areas.
Achievements in Telecommunications
During his address, Scindia also highlighted India's remarkable achievements in the telecommunications sector over the past decade. He noted that:
The number of Internet subscribers has surged from 25 crore to 95 crore.
Data consumption has skyrocketed, with users moving from consuming 1 GB of data daily to over 20 GB today.
Broadband subscriptions have grown exponentially, increasing from 6 crore to 92 crore.
Scindia reflected on India's journey in mobile technology, acknowledging that the country lagged during the 4G era but has now caught up with the world in the 5G era. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that India will lead globally in the development and implementation of 6G technology.
