The Department of Posts, through its GDS Section, has issued an important clarification regarding the eligibility of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) for gratuity or severance amount in specific circumstances.
This clarification addresses inquiries raised by the Tamil Nadu Circle through their DO letter No. APA/83-2/Rulings digs/2015-16 dated 18.10.2024.
Key Points of the Clarification
Eligibility for GDS Gratuity/Severance Amount
- As per the earlier communication dated 08.07.2021 (No. 17-31/2016-GDS), GDS employees who did not opt for the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (SDBS) and were subsequently absorbed into regular departmental posts are eligible for GDS Gratuity or Severance Amount.
- The eligibility is contingent upon meeting the prescribed conditions.
Instruction Against Grant of GDS Gratuity Post Regularization
- Referring to DG's Instructions No. 1 dated 16.01.1968 under Rule 6 of the Swamy's GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, it is clarified that GDS employees absorbed into regular departmental posts are not eligible for GDS Gratuity.
- Circles have been instructed to act per the 1968 directive to address gratuity-related cases.

The Chief Postmasters General of Tamil Nadu Circle and other Heads of Circles are requested to bring this clarification to the notice of all concerned.
