In a significant move to recognize the outstanding performance of railway staff, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the payment of a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days’ wages. This initiative will allocate a total of ₹2,028.57 crore to approximately 11,72,240 railway employees.

The PLB payment will benefit a diverse range of railway personnel, including Track Maintainers, Loco Pilots, Train Managers (Guards), Station Masters, Supervisors, Technicians, Technician Helpers, Pointsmen, Ministerial staff, and other Group C staff. The bonus serves as a motivational incentive, encouraging railway employees to continue improving the operational efficiency of the Indian Railways.

The disbursement of the PLB is traditionally made before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays, and this year follows suit, with eligible railway employees set to receive the equivalent of 78 days’ wages. The maximum payment per eligible employee will be ₹17,951.

The commendable performance of the Indian Railways during the fiscal year 2023-2024 is noteworthy, with record cargo loading reaching 1,588 million tonnes and nearly 6.7 billion passengers transported. This impressive achievement is attributed to various factors, including substantial improvements in infrastructure facilitated by record capital expenditure (Capex) from the Government, operational efficiencies, and advancements in technology.

The decision to grant the PLB not only acknowledges the hard work and dedication of railway employees but also aims to sustain and enhance the performance of one of the world's largest railway networks.

As the Indian Railways continues to evolve and adapt, the Cabinet’s approval of the PLB stands as a testament to the commitment towards improving both employee welfare and service delivery in the rail sector.
