Subject: Forcing Employees to Work on Sundays in Violation of Labour Laws
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the recent directive instructing staff members, including Postal Assistants (PA), Postmasters (PM), Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), and Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), to work on Sundays in order to meet targets related to the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar Yojana.
It has come to my attention that these staff members, who are already burdened with their regular duties, are now being compelled to work on Sundays, depriving them of much-needed rest and violating their rights as per labour laws. This practice is both unethical and illegal.
Furthermore, I am informed that these employees have not been adequately trained for the additional tasks assigned to them, nor have they been provided with the necessary resources, such as mobile handsets, to operate the required applications. Despite the circular mentioning "willingness," it is evident that they face undue pressure from officials to utilize their personal mobile devices for work purposes.
Numerous employee organizations have also raised similar concerns regarding this issue.
Therefore, I respectfully urge you to reconsider and withdraw the aforementioned instructions, and instead, ensure that these workers are granted a holiday on Sundays as per their entitlement.
I trust that you will take prompt action to address this matter and alleviate the concerns of the affected employees.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
Sincerely,
S.VENKATESAN
