The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, has taken a significant step towards organizing the cable television distribution network by introducing the National Register for Local Cable Operators (LCOs). Through an Office Memorandum dated 8th March 2024, the ministry outlined the objectives and procedures for this initiative.

The primary objective of the National Register for LCOs is to assign a unique National Registration Number to each LCO and compile a comprehensive database known as the National Register of LCOs. This move aims to streamline the cable television distribution sector and enhance transparency and accountability.

Earlier directives from the Ministry, including an Office Memorandum dated 8th February 2024 and subsequent communications on 27th February 2024, mandated all LCOs to furnish necessary details through the Broadcast Seva Portal by 15th March 2024.

The National Register has been published on the Broadcast Seva Portal and is continuously updated based on the information provided by LCOs. It is imperative for LCOs to ensure the accuracy of their details in the register. Any changes or updates to the information should be promptly communicated to the Ministry through the designated email address: lco.das@gov.in. LCOs must accompany such requests with a copy of their Registration certificate, indicating the changes.

The Ministry emphasizes that any updates to the National Register will be made solely based on the Registration certificate issued by the Registering Authority. This measure ensures the authenticity and reliability of the information contained in the register.

Recognizing the potential challenges that LCOs may encounter during the submission process, the Ministry encourages them to report technical issues or difficulties promptly. LCOs are instructed to raise tickets on the Broadcast Seva Portal for swift resolution of such concerns.

This initiative by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to modernize and regulate the cable television distribution network in India. By establishing a centralized National Register for LCOs, the government aims to foster a more transparent and efficient ecosystem, benefiting both industry stakeholders and consumers alike.
